The Real Voyage Of Discovery Consists - Free Essay Example

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. This quote by Marcel Proust speaks of discovering whatrs right in front of you by seeing it differently, with new eyes. In The Giver, Jonas, the main character goes through the same thing when discovering his Capacity to See Beyond. With an awareness and mindfulness that most people lack, Jonas can see his Community in a different way. Mindfulness is in fact one of the central themes in the book. Although the book starts by describing how the Community is a perfect utopia, it later turns out that everyone there is living a fake and superficial life. As Jonas begins his job as the Receiver of Memories, through the wisdom he receives, learns that the Community is missing feelings and emotions that the memories give. In the end, Jonas has a new respect for his way of seeing and chooses to go against the Community to restore mindfulness and memories back to the people. The people in Jonas Community share their feelings after each day in their dwellings. However, these feelings are merely surface feelings by the mindless people going through their fake and superficial days. For example, when Lily expressed anger over the incident at the park with the boy from another community who did not follow the rules, her anger was not truly anger. Instead, Jonas was able to realize that she felt impatient and exasperation and her feelings were calmed after discussing them with her family. Another example, after Jonas received a memory of a family celebrating Christmas, Jonas asked his father, Do you love me? His father laughed and was surprised that Jonas would use such a meaningless word. He suggested it would be more appropriate to consider whether he enjoys Jonas or takes pride in his accomplishments (page 127). In the beginning of the book, Jonas is like every other person following the rules in the Community. However, when something unexpected happened, like the flashback of the plane flying overhead, Jonas waited for someone to tell him what to do. Jonas, looking around anxiously, had seen others†adults as well as children†stop what they were doing and wait confused, for an explanation of the frightening event (page 1). However, as he received memories, learns about color, diversity, and war. From the memory of the red sleigh to the war, Jonas receives memories that give him a different outlook of the way he sees the world. Not just does he take on memories, but feelings such as joy and love, feelings that he had known before becoming the Receiver of Memory. Jonas ends up sharing memories, such as the elephant with Lily and colors with Asher, to give people a new understanding and meaning of the life they live. Finally, as Jonas grew more and more accustomed to his new way of seeing things, he decided to take it upon himself to restore the memories and mindfulness to the people in the Community he lives in. The thought of this happening only grew inside of him when he whispered to Gabe how different things would be if everyone could see things the he could and knew their grandparents. He told the sleeping new child that everyone could have the memories, and best of all, There could be love (pages 128-129). At once, he and The Giver devised a plan to give back the memories to the people, that way everyone have the emotions and feel love and pain, and most importantly so not one person would be the only one to have the memories. Once Jonas found out that Gabe was scheduled to be released, he immediately started with his plan. He stole food and his fathers bike, and him and Gabe set off to restore the memories to everyone in the Community. In the end, it is up to the reader to decide if the Community learned to see themselves and the world through new eyes. However, as Jonas comes truly understand the mindfulness that everyone was missing, the reader is left with a new understanding. Mindfulness made Jonas go from a fake life, like the people in the Community, to true love. How can the mindfulness that Jonas found help the reader find the fake or superficial parts in their own lives? How will the reader find a new understanding for the way they see things? And whom will the reader give their new insight too?

Scallop Facts Habitat, Behavior, Diet

Found in saltwater environments like the Atlantic Ocean, scallops are bivalved mollusks that can be found around the world. Unlike their relative the oyster, scallops are free-swimming mollusks that live inside a hinged shell. What most people recognize as a scallop is actually the creatures adductor muscle, which it uses to open and close its shell in order to propel itself through the water. There are more than 400 species of scallops; all are members of the Pectinidae family. Fast Facts: Scallops Scientific Name: PectinidaeCommon Name(s): Scallop, escallop,  fan shell,  or  comb shellBasic Animal Group:  InvertebrateSize: 1–6 inch valves (width of shell)Weight: Varies depending on speciesLifespan: Up to 20 yearsDiet:  OmnivoreHabitat:  Shallow marine habitats around the worldConservation  Status:  Varies depending on species Description Scallops are in the phylum Mollusca, a group of animals that also includes snails, sea slugs, octopuses, squid, clams, mussels, and oysters. Scallops are one of a group of mollusks known as  bivalves. These animals have two hinged shells that are formed of calcium carbonate. Scallops have anywhere from 50 to 100 eyes that line their  mantle. These eyes may be a brilliant blue color, and they allow the scallop to detect light, dark, and motion. They use their retinas to focus light, a job the cornea does in human eyes. Atlantic sea scallops can have very large shells, up to 9 inches in length. Bay scallops are smaller, growing to about 4 inches. The gender of Atlantic sea scallops can be distinguished. The females reproductive organs are red while the males are white. Bobby Ware/Getty Images   Habitat and Range Scallops are found in saltwater environments worldwide, ranging from the intertidal zone to the deep sea. Most prefer beds of seagrass amid shallow sandy bottoms, although some attach themselves to rocks or other substrates. In the United States, two kinds of scallops are sold as food. Atlantic sea scallops, the larger kind, are harvested wild from the Canadian border to the mid-Atlantic and are found in shallow open waters. Smaller bay scallops are found in estuaries and bays from New Jersey to Florida. There are large scallop populations in the Sea of Japan, off the Pacific coast from Peru to Chile, and near Ireland and New Zealand. The majority of farmed scallops are from China. Diet Scallops eat by filtering small organisms such as krill, algae, and larvae from the water they inhabit. As water enters the scallop, mucus traps plankton in the water, and then cilia move the food into the scallops mouth.   DEA PICTURE LIBRARY/De Agostini Picture Library/Getty Images Behavior Unlike other bivalves such as mussels and clams, most scallops are free-swimming. They swim by clapping their shells quickly using their  highly developed adductor muscle, forcing a jet of water past the shell hinge, propelling the scallop forward. Theyre surprisingly speedy. Scallops swim by opening and closing their shells using their powerful adductor muscle. This muscle is the round, fleshy scallop that anyone who eats seafood will instantly recognize. The adductor muscle varies in color from white to beige. The Atlantic sea scallops adductor muscle may be as big as 2 inches in diameter. Reproduction Many scallops are hermaphrodites, which means that they have both male and female sex organs. Others are only male or female. Scallops reproduce by spawning, which is when organisms release eggs and sperm into the water. Once an egg is fertilized, the young scallop is planktonic before settling to the sea floor, attaching to an object with byssal threads. Most scallop species lose this byssus as they grow and become free-swimming. Conservation Status There are hundreds of species of scallops; in general, they are not endangered. In fact, according to NOAA: U.S. wild-caught Atlantic sea scallop is a smart seafood choice because it is sustainably managed and responsibly harvested under U.S. regulations. Bivalves such as scallops, however, are threatened by  ocean acidification, which affects the ability of these organisms to build strong shells. Species Scallops are marine  bivalve  mollusks of the family Pectinidae; the best-known are species  of the  genus  Pecten. The family Pectinidae includes about 50 genera and subgenera and more than 400 species which live around the world. Scallop species vary in their habitats; while some prefer coastal areas and intertidal zones, others live deep under the ocean. All scallops are bivalves, and in most species, the two valves of the shell are fan-shaped. The two valves may be ribbed or smooth or even knobbed. Scallop shells vary radically in color; some are white while others are purple, orange, red, or yellow. Scallops and Humans Scallop shells are easily recognized and have been a symbol since  ancient times. The fan-shaped shells have deep ridges, and two angular protrusions called auricles, one on either side of the shells hinge. Scallop shells range in color from drab and gray  to vivid and multihued. Scallop shells are an emblem of St. James, who was a  fisherman in Galilea before becoming an apostle. James is said to be buried at Santiago de Compostela in Spain, which became a shrine and pilgrimage site. Scallop shells mark the road to Santiago, and pilgrims often wear or carry scallop shells. The scallop shell is also the corporate symbol for the petrochemical giant Royal Dutch Shell. Scallops are also a major commercially harvested seafood; certain species (Placopecten magellanicus, Aequipecten irradians, and A. opercularis) are highly prized. The large adductor muscle is the part of the scallop that is typically cooked and eaten. Scallops are harvested around the world; the most productive scallop grounds are off the coast of Massachusetts and in the Bay of Fundy off the coast of Canada. behaviorism vs humanism - 1043 Words

Behaviorism vs. Humanism Heather Murphy PSY331: Psychology of Learning Instructor Corey Pruitt September 1, 2014 Behaviorism vs. Humanism Behaviorism and humanism are two theories of learning. Both theories are very important, and have many good qualities, which makes it difficult to say that one is better than the other. When it comes to learning, behaviorism does not consider mental processes, rather it looks at our response to stimuli in our environment. Whereas, humanism sees learning as personal, and is dependent on each individual self. Even though the two theories seem completely opposite of each other, there are some similarities between them pertaining to learning. Behaviorism is explained as behavior†¦show more content†¦Behaviorists prefer to study animals because they feel they can be in a more controlled environment. Humanists disagree with this approach because humans and animals are not the same, and they react differently. Humanists believe that humans, not animals, are capable of thought, reason, and language; therefore animals should not be used in studying hum an behavior and thought (McLeod, 2007). Also, when performing studies, behaviorism uses a scientific approach, whereas humanism does not. The reason humanism uses a non-scientific approach is because it is very difficult to study emotions, feelings, and our consciousness scientifically. Therefore, interviews and other qualitative (individual) methods are used to study behavior (McLeod, 2007). In conclusion, you can see that both theories are important to our behavior and how it relates to learning. Though humanism ad behaviorism are quite different, they do have some similarities between them as well. Both theories suggest that we focus more on learning activities, rather than teaching activities in order to be a more effective learner. More importantly, we should focus on learning activities that pertain to each learner involved. The two theories also compare, in that they each utilize a set of principles and procedures. Communications Objectives According to the current situation of the company, it can be clearly said that the market position of the company is really well in the market but it decreases from the previous years. Blackmore mainly covers its most of the market in Australia. So, the company needs to develop some strategy to its market in Australia. From the SWOT analysis it can be clearly said that Blackmore is a well-known brand in the Australian market but if the marketing strategy is not clearly prepared than it may cause various problems for the company as it is clear from the SWOT analysis that the operational strategy of Blackmore is too common and not well structured. It should also be noted that the competition in the Australian market is increasing every year for diet and vitamin supplements and competitors in the market are actively participating in making their marketing strategy perfect (Retail world, 2012). Thus, Blackmore should also concentrate on their marketing strategy and should set their commu nication objectives by considering all the above points. SMARTT Communication objectives According to the current situation analysis of Blackmore communication, the SMARTT communication strategy should be as follows: At the end of year 22% of the Australian market should be covered by Blackmore with its Diet and Vitamin supplement products. This target audience should consider Blackmore products for some benefits. According to the above objective, it can be said that it uses the learn- dofeel effect hierarchy (Retail world, 2011). In this hierarchy model, the consumers develop their belief in the brand. This is done by searching information about the product and brand. This also develops the attitude of the customers towards the purchase of the products. 15% of the people from the market should prefer Blackmore products as Diet and vitamin supplements. This uses the Liking- Prefer hierarchy effects as these, in this type of hierarchy, people already like the products but they prefer it by experiencing the product. Success of this hierarchy depends on the effectiveness of the product otherwise the results may be seen opposite (Retail world, 2011). The other objective of Blackmore should be attracting new users which never used the Blackmore products. This objective is also related to the learn-do-feel hierarchy. As the consumers dont have any interest in this product, thus, the advertising should be done by repetitive messages and various offers should be provided to the users so that the users get attracted towards the product. The final objective of Blackmore should include outstanding starting of the new pet caring product (Retail world, 2012). This objective also uses the strategy learn-feel-do hierarchy as this product will also be new in the market. Thus, for getting attention of the people, the repetitive message marketing should be performed and various types of offers should also be provided to the consumers. Thus, the above communication objective should be set by the Blackmore Limited for the next year to retain its position in this competitive market. Creative Strategy Creative strategy actually is the strategy related to determination of what information should be provided in the advertising message. The tagline of this campaign will be the Stay healthy, Stay strong as this tagline suits the products of Blackmore Limited. Direct marketing will be done for two purposes (Sullivan, 2012). This will help in getting the people response towards the products of Blackmore and secondly, it will help in increasing the trust of people. Media Strategy Online Media The main promotional tool that should be used in campaign will be the online marketing. Currently, online marketing is the most effective and affordable way of marketing. Online social media covers half part of the world. The main online tools that will be used for the campaign will be the social media marketing. The main channels of the social media marketing will be Facebook, YouTube and Twitter (CFA Institute, 2012). The following table provides an image of the market covered by the different social media Social media Platform Market Covered (%) Facebook 55% Google+ 25% YouTube 22% Twitter 22% Table: Market covered by different social media platforms (Forbes, 2014). All the above social media provides both paid and unpaid marketing facilities. 2% increment in the market will be performed by paid services and 0.5% of the market increment will be performed by the unpaid marketing. Email marketing also comes under the online media. 1% of the market increment will be targeted through the email marketing. These ways can be used for both side communications. Broadcasting on Channels and hoardings These are the most expensive methods of marketing but are also very effective way of marketing (Sullivan, 2012). These marketing methods include the broadcasting of advertisements on the various television channels which are more popular in the market and are mostly seen by the people. This is also a great way to reach most of the people in a country. Hoardings also attract the people on road. The best way of performing hoarding marketing is to put the hoarding on most busy circle. People stuck in the traffic used to see these hoarding very carefully for time pass (Retail world, 2011). Thus, these ways of media communication will also be used. Nearly 2% of the increase in market will be performed by these ways of marketing. These ways can be used by only one side communication. Printed media The printed media that will be used are the most read newspapers, magazines, templates etc. These can also be used to cover large amount of people and can also be used for the one sided communication. Nearly 0.35% of the market will be increased using these tools of marketing. Events Various small events in which the customer executive will directly communicate with the people will be used as these media. These events will be basically organized in the shopping malls, fairs and any other crowded place (Retail world, 2012). This will help in knowing the customers perspective directly and the attitude of the customers towards the product can be identified more effectively and efficiently. This will cover fewer people but is a most effective way of both side communications. 0.15% market will be increased by this way. Samples- two mock ups The following are the two mock up samples for the Alive brand of Blackmore (Retail world, 2012). Figure : Stockist Incentives for Alive Campaign (Sullivan, 2012) Figure: POS activity for Alive (Sullivan, 2012) The above figures are the two sample mock ups for the integrated marketing communication. These mock ups are clearly describing the objectives of the marketing campaign. Campaign Evaluation The campaign will be evaluated both before the campaign, while the campaign and after the campaign. The first step of evaluation includes the concept testing. The effectiveness rough idea that is going to be the brand or campaign concept will be measured (Sullivan, 2012). This will help in assuring that the concept is appropriate for the campaign. There are three steps in concept testing. Testing concept and Creative strategies Copy testing to predict effects, and Testing for persuasion measurement. First step of concept testing is performed by intercept surveys and focusing on groups. The second step of concept testing is performed by attention, Emotional responses, brand awareness and physiological responses. The third step of testing is performed by Theatre test, Test marketing and tracking various studies related to integrated marketing communication (Retail world, 2012). Theatre testing is one of the effective ways of evaluating the concept. In this testing, various people will be invited to the location and the campaign sample will be shown to the people to evaluate their responses. In test marketing, a research test will be organized. In this test, the IMC campaign will be run in 2 to 4 markets and the response of the people will be examined. All the above evaluation will be performed before the campaign (CAAD, 2014). The tests which will be performed during the campaign is concurrent testing. Concurrent testing is a test that will track the performance of campaign and messages used in the campaign. For concurrent testing, various surveys will be performed for getting the performance of the organised campaign. These surveys will help in getting the users experience in the campaign (Sullivan, 2012). Various interviews will also be performed for testing the response of the campaign. The testing which will be performed after the campaign will be the evaluative testing. In evaluative testing, the end result of the campaign will be examined. Whether the end result will be fulfilling the objectives of the campaign or not. The success of IMC program is evaluated using this test. This testing will help in improving the next campaign (CAAD, 2014). Thus, the above evaluation is necessary for any campaign to be successful. These evaluations help in enhancing the performance of any campaign. Evaluations before and during the campaign will help in present campaign while the evaluation after the campaign will help in making the strategy for next campaign (Forbes, 2014). Budget The budget for the above described campaign is as follows: Budget for online Media Social media marketing Facebook Campaigning $5,000 Google+ Campaigning $2,500 YouTube Campaigning $2,000 Twitter Campaigning $2,000 Total Social media campaigning $11,500 Email Marketing $1,000 Google Ad words $750 SEO marketing $2,000 Other online marketing Campaigning $2,000 Total budget required for online marketing $17,250 Budget for TV channels broadcasting and Hoardings V. channel broadcasting $100,000 Hoarding $75,000 Total budget required $175,000 Budget Required for Printed media Newspaper $10,000 Magazines $10,000 Templates $500 Total budget required for printed media $20,500 Budget Required for events Total Budget for events $100,000 Other Budgets $20,000 Total budget required for full campaign $332750 Thus, the budget required for the full campaign is around $332750. Conclusion The above report is the result of various studies and research. According to the above report, it can be concluded that Blackmore Limited deals with the products related to diet and vitamin supplements which can be taken as medicines for fulfilling the essential components like Vitamins. By seeing the performance of the company for year 2011 and 2012, it can be said that Blackmore popularity is decreasing (Forbes, 2014). Thus, it is very necessary to build an integrated marketing communication campaign for Blackmore Limited which will help Blackmore in gaining the market again. The IMC campaign for Blackmore will be done by performing the proper planning of campaign. The planning of IMC campaign will include the various sources like online media, T.V. channel broadcasting and hoardings, printed media and various other types of events which will create the awareness about the Blackmore products among the people (CFA Institute, 2012). Thus, this campaign will aim to create the awareness of Blackmore products among the people so that Blackmore can gain its defined objectives. References Sullivan, A. (2012). Blackmore Alive! Musaabir Laiyemo Essays - Education, Health, Nursing, Free Essays

Musaabir Laiyemo Essays - Education, Health, Nursing, Free Essays Musaabir Laiyemo Professor Atkins ENGW 104 038 November 22 , 2015 Critical Writing Redefined Much can be said about the debate between academic and critical writing. I believe academic writing is any writing that is done for a class in a high school, college, or university and follows a particular guideline. Critical writing would be writing that is done to analyze and critique anything that the writer d eems fit . This includes but is not limited to books, plays, art, speeches, sports events, or even a normal conversation. In regards to my major, nursing, critical writing would be writing that it done to analyze and critique a paper and understand the reason why the author chose to write it. These two forms of writing have a couple of similarities and differences that distinguish what their purpose is. Academic and critical writing are two forms of literary writing that analyze and respond to events or texts for different reasons in different ways. As stated in the introduction, I believe that critical writing is writing that is done to analyze, critique, and comment on the stren g th of the argument of an event . While critical writing is usually associated with being done in response to literary work, it could be done in response to anything at all. In regards to my major (nursing) critical writing could be writing that is done to analyze and examine anything within nursing as long as it relates to the field. For example, "The Politics of Intimate Care: Gender, Race, and Nursing Work" by Charissa J. Threat is a prime representative of critical writing within nursing. This article critically examines the history of nursing and analyzes what made the field predominately female the way it is today. To accurately redefine what critical writing is in nursing, one would have to have a knowledge of what critical writing is and have experience reading and writing papers on the topic. This form of writing would be done solely for those who are in the nursing field and have a certain understanding and knowledge about the topic. This is because it would contain a lot of jargon that anyone outside of the field may not understand. While a certain form of critical writing would only be for those in the nursing field, critical writing can exist in any format. The same article that can be published in a medical/nursing journal can also be published in an everyday magazine like People or Us Weekly. However, it'd have to be written differently because the target audience isn't the same. A lot more common and simpler words would have to be used so the mainstream audience can understand. In "The Politics of Intimate Care: Gender, Race, and Nursing Work", Threat uses simple terms to describe early viewpoints on nursing. She analyzes the concept of nursing being meant for women because the actual nursing job is "inferior to medicine" (Threat 14) and women were considered to be inferior to men. Therefore, it was supposed to be the perfect job for women because they were supposed to be "cooperative, loyal, and obedient" (Threat 11) or something the y have been their whole lives. These commonly known words help str engthen her argument because the audience understands them and can now see her point of view better and take their own stand on the topic. Writers in nursing have a responsibility to their fellow peers to explain the topic that they are writing on and provide reasons for why it is important and should be taken seriously. The writer has to make sure that the topic that he or she is writing on is relevant and affects the lives of numerous people. On the other hand, writers who write for audiences outside of nursing have a harder job. These writers would have to make sure they explain what the topic is and why the audience should even read the piece of work. Moreover, the writer has the responsibility to avoid jargon and use common words to explain their topic while keeping the work fairly concise. They would also have to make sure the writing is engaging enough so that the reader doesn't put down the
